The South Florida Water Management District has some tips for water conservation on their water conservation webpage, and they also have a useful online tool called the Water Use Calculator.  Unlike typical water use calculators, this calculator is designed to give you two key pieces of information:
  1. How much water you are currently consuming on a daily basis;  and,
  2. How much water you could be saving with more efficient fixtures and appliances.
You may be surprised to see how quickly the gallons add up ... and how easy it is to reduce your use!

Outdoor Water Uses Add Up – Did you know ….

  • A single lawn sprinkler sprays approximately five gallons of water per minute at a medium flow rate, or 10 gallons per minute at a high flow rate.

  • It takes about 660 gallons of water to supply 1,000 square feet of lawn with one inch of water.

  • A broken sprinkler head wastes about 300 gallons of water in an hour.

  • The average garden hose flows at 10-16 gallons per minute.

  • A small leak in a garden hose can waste 700 gallons of water per day.


FUN WATER FACT

A family of four uses the toilet on average 7,592 times a year, which uses from 23,000 to 38,000 gallons of water if you have a conventional toilet.  A 1.2 gallon low flush toilet would use only about 9,100 gallons.
